Amansara, Siem Reap: Cool, Calm, Collected

Cambodia’s templetown Siem Reap may be extremely well-endowed in the teak retreat department, but if cool, modernist post-ruin respite is more to your fancy, there’s but one name you need to know – Amansara.

Once the former guesthouse of the royal family, and retaining much of its 1960s, Laurent Mondet-designed character, the Aman’s low-slung chalet compound is a creamy stone sanctuary of just 24 suites all featuring terrazzo and timber finishes, king beds, floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking peaceful courtyards privés, and twin vanity bathrooms with large soaking tubs (with half boasting private plunge pools).

You’re situated but 10 minutes drive from the magnificent Angkor Wat complex, and after a long day of tomb-raiding, what could be grander than a rejuvenating dip in the lagoon or lap pool, followed by sundowners on the roof terrace, and a Khmer feast in the airy dining room? Better still, treat your weary explorer’s aches with a visit to the excellent spa, where Cambodian techniques and own brand amenities punctuate luxurious treatments for face and body. Wat-a star!
