Best New Bars: January 2016

We regularly update the LUXE app with inside intel sourced from our smart and savvy global resident editors. This month, we’re forgoing our ‘Dry January’ detox in favour of… well, retox. Here are our fave new spots. Cin cin!

Estrella, Los Angeles

Named for the circus girl in Joni Mitchell’s ‘Ladies of the Canyon’, chef Dakota Weiss’ resto/bar is outfitted for the contemporary canyon with fecund foliage, fairy lights, eucalyptus and fir all reminiscent of undergrowth. Add a cherry piano, wood burning fire, leaded windows, and mod American all-day menu… But we recommend coming here in the evening, and perching in the patio for cocktails when the light is most hypnotising.

Club Rayé, Paris

What’s black and white and striped all over? Retro vibed Rayé, bien sur, with bang on theme salt n’ pepper pasta, popcorn and banded cocktails. NY transplant and owner Kein Cross also delivers on the ivories, scouting local talent, hosting regular events, and catering to the city’s desperately under-served piano bar market. Chic meets melodic.

Heartbreaker, Melbourne

The rightly cocky ‘tailers behind Fitzroy sip stalwart The Everleigh are behind this new rouge-lit, rock-tune reppin’ neo dive… complete with panelled poolroom. The tatted n’ groomed tenders don’t shake it up, instead classic Negronis, Martinis and Manhattans are all perfectly pre-mixed, bottled and then poured up pronto. If it all sounds a bit alco-pop, fret not – these mixes still have more punch than Pacquiao.

Heartbreaker, 234a Russell St, CBD, Melbourne, +61 3 9041 0856, heartbreakerbar.com.au

Guzzo, Barcelona

This late-night boom box offers a laid-back, eclectic venue for musicians and musos alike, with a focus on jazz, soul and funk. Add to that killer cocktails, soul food and a lively crowd and you too will be gettin’ down just for the funk of it.

Guzzo, Pl Comercial, 10, Born, Barcelona, +34 93 667 0036, guzzo.es

Dandelyan, London

White Lyan mastermind Ryan Chetiyawardana’s botanical cocktails bring Londoners as close to nature as the urban-slick Tom Dixon-ed surrounds will allow. Tipples are tailored to suit the time of day, with ingreds including bitter blackcurrants, crystal peach nectar, and of course, dandelion. Bloomin’ marvellous.

Tip: Rock up on a Tuesday when their house band takes to the stage, or, for pant-dropping river views, zip up to the hotel’s quieter Rumpus Room.

Dandelyan, Mondrian Hotel, 20 Upper Ground, SE1, London, +44 20 3747 1000, morganshotelgroup.com
