5 mod pubs and whisky bars for that perfect pint

March 12, 2020

In need of a bit of luck? Stop by these Irish-esque watering holes, beer fueled pubs and whisky bars the world over for your pot of golden ale.

Tokyo: Man in the Moon

Tokyo is awash with flat-packed faux Irish pubs, but not the Man in the Moon. Considered the ‘most authentic’ of the bunch, this diminutive drinker is packed with sports fans and atmosphere, plus a terrific whisky selection, natch.

Man in the Moon, 3-15-4 Shimbashi, Minato-ku, Tokyo, maninthemoonpub.com

London: Jerusalem Tavern

Classic English watering hole with great beers and ales from Suffolk's St. Peter’s Brewery served in an atmospheric cask-lined Clerkenwell cutie. The former 1720 merchant’s house and shop, now an ode to ye olde-style pubbe with wonky, fire-warmed interiors, simple wood furny, retro tiles and bare boards, draws a faithful media/law/biz crowd.

Chicago: Sportsman’s Club

Hipsters n’ hunters alike troop to this Euro-ish, taxidermied tavern replete with a daily-changing catalogue of spirit-focused libations, live tunes and cosy back veranda.

Melbourne: Boilermaker House

The Eau de Vie team's handsome, woody dude den for whisky flights, scotch-centric muddles, boutique beers and charcuterie aplenty.

Boilermaker House, 209-211 Lonsdale St City, Melbourne, boilermakerhouse.com.au

Madrid: Bar Cock

Baronial hall-cum-pub favourite that attracts a good mixed crowd, once you get past the feisty doorman. Behind its imposing wood and marble portal, this Chueca stalwart is a blissful Anglicised nook of ornate, beamed interiors, softly-lit pendant lights and cockerel motifs. Beer, wine, cava and whisky neat for late-night quaffing.
