If you’ve braved the rainy season and will be in Thailand at the end of the month, you’re in for a treat. Loy Krathong Festival falls on the eve of the full moon in the 12th lunar month – that’s Monday, November 27 to you and me. Ever since the Sukhothai era, Thai people have been paying homage to the Goddess of Rivers and Oceans, Phra Mae Khongkha, with krathong votive offerings set afloat in rivers and lakes.
Representing joy, gratitude and to ward off bad luck or bring about new beginnings, the candle-lit krathong floats will be lighting up the Chao Phraya river in Bangkok for a brilliant festival of lights. Want in on the action? Here’s where to celebrate Loy Krathong in Bangkok:
The Peninsula Bangkok
The Peninsula Bangkok is riverside oasis at which to enjoy Loy Krathong festivities. The best table will be outside along the River of Kings to watch the illuminated water and enjoy the festival’s fireworks. Entertainment for the evening includes a pageant, traditional Thai dance and puppet shows as well as floating krathongs in Chao Phraya, plus a gala dinner buffet to boot.

Strolling over to make an offering on your way home from dinner or a massage on Sukhumvit Road is a nice option too. Join the stream of celebrants pouring out of the Sukhumvit MRT / Asok BTS station and follow them to Benchakitti Park where vendors will happily sell you a krathong that you can set afloat along with hundreds of local families in the park’s lake.
