Sekeping Sin Chew Kee, Kuala Lumpur: Hip Heritage

February 01, 2016

Tucked along a row of charming colonial houses in perhaps one of the city's last vestiges of old Kuala Lumpur, Sekeping Sin Chew Kee strikes a refreshing balance between hip and heritage.

The boutique guesthouse is the latest addition to Malaysian landscape architect Ng Sek San's eclectic collection of hotels – all of which are devoted to the showcasing of local architectural gems.

The seemingly crumbly little house is distinguished from the street by a large iron sculpture suspended across the second storey, a prelude to the delicate design thread that runs throughout its interior. The pared back single or queen-size rooms are each furnished sparingly with crisp white linens, mosquito nets, ceiling fans, local artwork and timber shutters salvaged from neighbouring homes which stay open throughout the day.

While facilities are simple, the luxury of this pad is in the abundance of space, with huge, airy communal areas, and a leafy red-brick courtyard.
