5 New Hot Spots in Kuala Lumpur

August 17, 2020

Part-grunge, part-glitz, Kuala Lumpur is an ultra-mod city that draws in the 'Crazy Rich Asians' crowd — look for the Ferraris out front and stylistas strutting in the latest Jimmy Choos – plus avid foodies from around the world. This tropical jungle escape is ever-changing, so here are the newest openings to eat, drink and bed down at.

EAT

Flour Restaurant

Black and white accented fine-diner cooking up Indian-French gastronomy. Worth the schlep to their newly reno’d n’ refurb’d locale with a life-sized winged gold unicorn to top. Tip: Get the melt-in-your-mouth lamb chops topped with creamy mint sauce and naan on the side.

Flour Restaurant, 12 Jalan Kamuning, Off Jalan Imbi, +60 012 960 0053, flourrestaurant.com.my

Mr. Chew's Chino Latino Bar

Dig into Latin-infused Asian tapas while being lorded over by an imposing, larger-than-life Empress Dowager Cixi, flanked by tequila, tortilla chips, and her trusty pet flamingo (she's but a painting). Tip: Get yourself a takeaway G&T.

Mr. Chew's Chino Latino Bar, The Penthouse, Wolo Hotel, Corner of Jalan Bukit Bintang and Jalan Sultan Ismail, +60 03 2162 0886, mr-chew.com

DRINK

The Iron Fairies

After hitting Hong Kong, Aussie metal maestro Ashley Sutton's Bangkok bunker takes a trip to KL. Flit between the floral-ceilinged two-room dancer for late-night underground sounds and old school funk. Whimsy tipples and stellar 'tails await.

The Iron Fairies, TREC Entry 3, H-G-06, 438, Jalan Tun Razak, +60 01 6221 3612, facebook.com/theironfairieskl

Joloko

Step off the colonial streets to this popping resto-bar and be greeted by a whole lotta Caribbean loco. A blend of Afro-beats, an insane mezcal selection and tropical 'tails to melt the blues away. Time to run with the crowd.

Joloko, 43 Jalan Kamunting,Off Dang Wangi, +60 03 2694 1100, bar-joloko.com

SLEEP

The Chow Kit

Elegant 86-room sleeper plays host to subtle Malay touches, with sublime prints, deep velveteen pews and dark mahogany furnishings for a Wes Anderson-worthy romantic elegance. Interiors are reminiscent of some of New York's finest boutique hotels, which makes sense when you realise they were put together by Brooklyn-based Studio Tack. This stylin' ode to mid-century and 1970s design is surrounded by stellar shops, sips, and sups.

Tip: Dine at The Chow Kit Kitchen, the latest conceptual incarnation from Christian Bauer and Eddie Chew of Troika Sky Dining.

The Chow Kit, 1012 Jalan Sultan Ismail, +60 03 2778 6666, thechowkit.com
