Hello Gorgeous: Lily Jones, Baker

Lily Jones (aka Lily Vanilli) is the brains and deft fingers behind some of London’s best, sinfully delicious baked goods, which you’ll no doubt have sniffed while wandering down Columbia Road. Between concocting new recipes and putting together her bestselling cookbooks, Lily sat down with us for a quick chat…

Who are you and what are you wearing?

I’m Lily Jones, baker and owner of Lily Vanilli Bakery, and I’m wearing Nudie skinny black jeans, tight black sweater, black platforms and silver hoops

Three words to describe your approach to baking?

Delicious, innovative, modern

Best advice you’ve ever been given?

Trust your instincts, and say no when you mean it

24 hours in London, what are the must-dos?

Watch the sun come up somewhere over the Thames, walk around central London & visit the British Museum & Tate Britain, cocktails in Soho, then dive bars like The Crobar and the Garlic & Shots basement, maybe Trisha’s, then dinner at St Johns Bread & Wine. Dalston for a party!

Favourite restaurant or bar perch in London?

Smoking Goat for food and drinks

What was the last memorable meal you ate?

The hot & sour soup and dumplings at North China Dumplings in Cambridge, it’s one of my favourite spots to go to with my boyfriend.

Favourite smell?

The mix for my winter carrot cake boiling on the stove, it always means I’m feeling cosy.

Three fantasy dinner dates, and what would you serve?

Townes van Zandt, David Byrne, Tom Waits. I’d serve my borscht and dumplings, a couple of pies, wine and whisky

____ is the best therapy?

Laughter is the best therapy, then baking!
