Who says alcohol and altitude don’t mix? During the balmy summer months, there’s nothing more Melbourne than enjoying sips and sights from one of the city’s many rooftop bars. Here are the next-level imbibers that top our list.
Suits, politicos and stylistas scamper up the stairs for Aperol Spritz and stellar vistas of Parliament House on this dreamy terrace perched atop Melbourne Supper Club. Reserve seats in advance or arrive in the afternoon to snatch up one of the prime benches by the railings.

Just a few doors down from Siglo, The Imperial Hotel’s rooftop bar is that rare gem in this city: a real-deal pub with impressive roof real estate. It enjoys the same awesome views of Parliament House as its aforementioned neighbour, but the atmosphere is altogether more relaxed, with ice-cold pints and five types of patties to choose from.

Loll on the AstroTurf at this in/out garden party pad, sporting Pimm’s jugs, a latticed balcony and trim staff in perky Fred Perry tennis wear. Don’t let the daggy lift entrance beside the Spaghetti Tree put you off; once aloft, you’ll be lavished with tree-lined cityscapes and heavenly cocktails.

Disregard the misleading moniker: pants stay securely on at this Fitzroy rooftop. The hip crowd does however go rowdy for craft draughts, wham-bam pano views, infused vodka on tap, and Basque-inspired bites. Enter via the lift at the back of sister restaurant, Naked for Satan.

Located right on the St Kilda sands, this bayside beauty is the ultimate spot to soak up some sun. The bar reps a vast deck, nautical striped banquettes, punchy pitchers and palm tree-framed panoramas of the sparkling blue beyond.

With simple bevs and eye-popping views of the skyline, this rooftop bar is hard to top, but it gets even better on balmy summer evenings when the sky-high hangout transforms into an outdoor theatre for new releases and old indie classics. Deckchairs, drinks and Damon – done.
Rooftop Cinema screenings take place nightly from Dec-Mar. L/6, Curtain House, 252 Swanston St, City. +61 3 9654 5394. rooftopcinema.com.au
