LUXE Loves: The Beekman, New York
LUXE Loves is the regular feature where we spotlight our all-time favourite places in the world. From spiff boutique stays to the finest diners, dapper drinkers and swooniest shops… welcome to the crème of our curated cohort.
Why We Love It:
While charming, old-world atmos and vintage aesthetic may reign supreme at The Beekman’s dramatic Downtown quarters, there’s nothing out of date about Gotham’s coveted new flop-spot.
Now dwarfed by granite, glass and steel neighbours, the Queen Anne-style, turreted Temple Court building was one of New York's first skyscrapers when it debuted in 1881.
Today, the majestic residence is home to 287 Martin Brudnizki-designed chambers mixing aged oak floors, plush velvet upholstery, and a melange of pre-loved antique furnishings juxtaposed with bespoke decor pieces (peepers peeled for the ceramic Foo Dog serving as a table lamp base, and the Art Nouveau table skirt hushed behind the minibar), vibrant lashings of colour and lush Carrara marble ensuites.
The real star, however, is a show-stopping, nine-storey, Victorian-era atrium towering above decadently plush lobby-lounger The Bar Room, and surrounded by filigreed railings and mosaic-tiled floors.
Once you’ve ogled the manor’s magnificent centrepiece (or lack thereof!), float into one of the hotel’s stellar on-site diners to continue the sensory spectacle. Opulent, chandeliered Fowler & Wells pays homage to classic NYC via oysters Rockefeller and lobster salads conjured by pan-man Tom Colicchio of Top Chef fame, while restaurateur Keith McNally’s Augustine peddles hearty Gallic portions in a romantic brasserie.
