Shanghai’s Best Menswear Makers

February 05, 2016

In search of a spiffy new wardrobe for a spiffing new year? Lucky for all you China-bound dandies, Shanghai is positively bursting at the seams with top-drawer tailors, on-point shoemakers and stylish accessory troves. We’ve stitched up the very best this sartorially savvy city has to offer…

First, to get suited; and it doesn’t get much smarter than long-time LUXE go-to Tony The Tailor, who – despite the geezerish moniker – can rival the silhouettes of Savile Row with his imported fabrics, timeless craftsmanship and staggering 6-day turnaround. He really is grrrrrreat. Or, swing by Forbes favourite Dave’s Custom Tailoring (voted ‘World’s Top Bespoke’) for its thick swatches of quality threads and signature hand-stitched lapels.

In a hurry, Murray? If you must go off-the-peg, strut no further than heritage French Concession flagship of Euro brand Suitsupply. Classic cuts and attention to detail, courtesy of the onsite alterations team (not to mention, reasonable price points) make these ready-to-wear getups as sharp as a tailor’s shears.

Of course, you’ll need a shirt to go under that new three-piece, so saunter over to WW Chan & Sons on Maoming Nan Lu for chemises made to your measurements from luxuriantly soft English and Italian-milled cottons, with single needle French seams and look-at-me embroidered initials.

No elegant ensemble would be complete without a pair of bespoke brogues, and that’s where clever cobbler Jack Peng comes in handy. Styles include Derbies, loafers and ankle boots chiselled from Spanish leather, Italian suede and Australian crocodile skin in a rainbow of colours and with a choice of inner linings and laces. For a final personal flourish, have your signature etched into the sole of your shoe.

Finish the look with some polished Oriental-tinged cufflinks from Shanghai Tang, and a luscious leather belt and man bag from trig local trend-setter Project Aegis Co. How’s that for suit-ably attired?
