Federal Cafe, Barcelona: Java Scene Sways Oz

Just a Manolo’s throw from the museums of Montjuïc, and inspired by a rear-end of nowhere town in Oz – and dare we say it, Bill’s – sits hip, all-day, Sydney-style Federal Cafe.

Conceptualised by architect Barbara Appolloni, and Aussie lads-about-town Tommy Tang and Nigel Chouri (founders of LUXE fave, artisan sweet shop Papabubble), this formerly derelict corner is complete with retractable windows and cushioned wall perches ideal for ogling locals, plus a leafy little rooftop to boot.

For the most important meal of the day there’s banana porridge, free range poached eggs, and knockout fruit toast with ricotta and truffle honey; while their full complement of big flave bevs ranges from classic Bloody M’s and local cavas, to leftfield creations like dandelion soy latte, Honeysuckle Daiquiri, and of course, killer joe. And if your brain needs feeding too, there’s a good stack of English-language mags and papers. Oh Federal, you can govern us any time!
