As 2021 comes to a close – just as country borders are doing the same now thanks to new variants of Covid-19 – 2022 travel trends and predictions are starting to trickle in.
Google, for instance, commissioned Ipsos for a survey that’s resulted in three key travel trends for 2022. For starters, most travellers will likely be travelling for “life moments” such as weddings, new jobs, education or a bigger move – after putting them off indefinitely due to the pandemic.
Google also predicts that travel will become more inclusive and more purposeful in 2022. Cultural engagement was cited as a key deciding factor when it came to destinations, while the environment and sustainability were also important considerations when it came to flights and hotels.
Expedia has also just released their 2022 Travel Trends Report, which is based on Expedia’s own data and a global research study that polled 12,000 individuals in 12 countries. According to their results, many travellers are planning to “go big” in 2022 and have their eyes set on international destinations such as Rome, Paris, London and Bali.
Calling it the “GOAT” (Greatest Of All Trips) mindset, Expedia found that 40% of those surveyed are more willing than ever to splurge on their next trip. Domestic travel is still strong, especially in the US, but 37% are still looking at planning both domestic and international trips for next year.
After being grounded for close to two years, those who do travel in 2022 are prepared to spoil themselves silly, whether it’s on a local “splurge-cation”, upgrading their flights and hotel rooms, visiting a bucket list destination or indulging in luxurious experiences.
Travellers are also more willing to step outside of their comfort zones to try new things in an effort to feel excited and exhilarated again, with examples being sleeping under the stars, skinny dipping, travelling solo or hooking up on the road.
