Hello Gorgeous: Suzy Menkes, Vogue Int’l Editor

Stillies on! Today marks the kickoff of the second annual Conde Nast Luxury Conference 2016…

The two-day event is hosted by none other than Vogue’s fabulous international fashion editor Suzy Menkes, and we were lucky enough to steal a few minutes with her before she took the stage.

Fashion journalist Suzy has spent 30 years cementing her reputation as one of the foremost critics of our time, with 25 years at the International Herald Tribune before she joined Vogue International. This week she reports live from Seoul – follow her on Instagram at @suzymenkesvogue.

Why Seoul for the second CNI Luxury Conference? What’s special about the luxury scene here?

Seoul is in several ways in advance of Europe and the US – there are new luxury arenas beyond shops selling products. The enthusiasm for plastic surgery is an example of how a goal for luxury spending can be different in South Korea. [Ed note: read Suzy’s article on the so-Seoulite nip/tuck on Vogue UK.]

How does Seoul compare with major fashion capitals like New York and Paris?

I don’t think it is a case of Seoul trying to be like Paris, London or New York; the interest is in the difference. International stores like Kenny Park’s homegrown Simone flagship 0914 are bolder and more dramatic than might be found in Europe or the US.

Who are some ‘ones to watch’ Korean designers?

I haven’t seen enough, but to mention a few… Steve J & Yoni PBLINDNESS by Shin Kyu Yong; D. GNAK by Kang Dong-Jun; Resurrection by Juyoung Lee, and Kye

What are some of your favourite style trends in Asia?

I find the coming together of male and female looks in Korea very modern and appealing. For example, the Juun.J flat-front trousers are an interesting invention.

Do you have a favourite fashion city anywhere in the world?

I don’t have a single city. I always like to find something new.

You’re on the road a lot – what’s always in your carry on?

The three ‘C’s: computer, charger and cream for face and hands.

And finally… Where do you get your hair done?

My hair style was invented by John Frieda in London, but using a single curved comb from Alexandre de Paris to hold up my quiff!!!

LUXE has partnered with MCM to produce an exclusive set of custom insider guides and a personalised Seoul app for those attending the conference.
