High Culture on the High Line

New York’s elevated railway track turned urban park The High Linepulls locals and visitors alike with its staggering Hudson River panoramas and leafy respite. This year, the strip celebrates a milestone 20 years with a series of walking tours, dance parties, musical performances and family festivals. To make the most of The High Line and surrounds (all year round), just stroll this way…

Start your foray at the iconic Whitney Museum of American Art, abuzz with the mania of the Biennial from until 22 Sep. This eclectic showcase – one of the world’s most renowned – spotlights some 60-odd artists to give a fantastic survey of US art today; this is your once-in-every-three-years chance to see it!

Now head over to under-the-arches food hall, the Chelsea Market, to fill a picnic basket with quintessential East Coast fare such as lobster rolls, fruity popsicles and Champers, natch, before heading up the steps for a gently breezy amble along The High Line. Although busy along its initial stretch, this aerial gangway becomes quieter just north of 15th, where you can find a spot to plop down and enjoy your banquet.

As you arrive at the northern terminus of the walkway you’ll espy newly minted The Shed, rising up like a hulking white mattress above the Chelsea gallery district. This spectacular multimedia performance space, designed by NYC starchitects Diller Scofidio + Renfro, hosts events spanning everything from hip hop to classical music, painting to digital media, theatre to literature, and sculpture to dance. Current shows include kung-fu musical Dragon Spring Phoenix Rise (until 27 July).

About turn and wander back along the walkway for sweeping sunset views over the Hudson, before descending to street level for a vibey Med-tinged supper at colourful Santina. Buonissimo!
