LUXE Loves: HR Tours, Vintage Car Rentals in Rome

Fueled by a passion for Italian motors, Stefano Lombardi runs classic car rentals and city tours—with or without drivers—out of Rome and Florence. Hop on a vintage Vespa, Fiat Topolino or VW Camper for a true Roman holiday as you take in the sights and sounds of Italy. Vroom, vroom!

We caught up with Stefano to learn more about the history of HR Tours (a rec from our Rome city guide), his favourite places in the Eternal City and where he’s planning to travel next:

How did you come up with this amazing business idea?

I started the business in 1990 to promote iconic Italian motors to the world. I’ve always had a passion for vintage cars, and I’m lucky to have managed to turn it into a business.

What are the most popular rentals and why?

The Fiat 500, Vespa and Alfa Romeo Spider—all of which are Italian icons. The Fiat 500 was known as the ‘people’s car’ in Italy as it was made to be economical and small, and the Vespa was inspired by US military vehicles from WWII. The Alfa Romeo Spider Duetto became famous thanks to the 1967 film, The Graduate.

Who are your customers, mainly?

Individuals and groups coming from all over the world! We’ve had guests from the US, Canada, UK, Northern Europe, Asia and Australia. They come for everything from corporate trips to travel awards and weddings!

Most memorable customers?

Justin Timberlake, Jessica Biel, Steve Ballmer, English royalty, and many other movie stars!

Your favourite car of all time?

Definitely the Alfa Romeo Spider. It’s got power and style.

Top three places in Rome?

The Appian Way, Colosseum and Aventine Hill. I tend to like places with a lot of history, but without too many tourists.

Where do you like to travel?

I’ve visited a total of 54 countries around the world. My first trip was by train in 1975 and every year, I take a solo trip with just a backpack on my shoulder. My last two trips were to Africa and Japan.

Where are you planning to go next?

North Korea! It’s one of the last places in the world that’s untouched by globalisation.
