From spruced-up digs to established artisan retailers and to-die-for diners, we turn the gimlet eye of LUXE onto the places we rate most.
What: Mott 32
Where: Central, Hong Kong
Why we love it: Rough-luxe subterranean lair of showstopping, Chinoiserie-dappled design and meticulous mod Sino fare. Opt for a table on the cavernous main floor for maximum buzz, or retire to an intimate private or semi-private dining room to sample elevated renditions of Cantonese, Sichuanese and Beijing specialties, including a standout apple wood-roasted Peking duck.
Tip: For Oriental Express-inspired opulence, request a table in the Orange Room. And if you’re after the famed Peking Duck, be sure to order at least 72 hours in advance.
What’s new: Since opening in 2014, Mott 32 continues to reign supreme as one of Hong Kong’s top fine Chinese restaurants with style and substance. The flagship resto of Maximal Concepts has since gone global with international locales in Vancouver, Singapore and Las Vegas, with many more to come. Not just serving carnivorous foodies, Mott 32 now also boasts an extensive vegetarian menu with delicious plant-based dishes including the signature Peking “Duck” with crispy tofu skin, Shanghainese soup dumplings with minced “pork” and tofu, and the signature smoked “cod.”
Part of their longstanding commitment to sustainability, Maximal Concepts’ co-founders Malcolm Wood and Matt Reid hope to raise awareness and inspire a more sustainable approach to dining, especially through Chinese fine dining.
