LUXE Reviews: The Langham, Shanghai Xintiandi

One of Shanghai’s top entertainment districts, Xintiandi is a mecca for high-end shopping, eating and drinking – especially with its aesthetic (read: Instagrammable) shikumen (aka. “stone gate” houses) buildings converted into bookstores, cafes, shops and restaurants.

Look up and you’ll also find something that looks a little more futuristic – glassy shopping malls, ritzy residential buildings, and a stunning, honeycomb-like structure that is the flagship property for Langham Hotels in China: The Langham, Shanghai Xintiandi.

Location

Not only does The Langham, Shanghai Xintiandi boast a superb location for exploring the area – getting there from the airport takes only around one hour (from Pudong) and 40 minutes (from Hongqiao), while the Xintiandi Station (exit 6) is just 10 minutes away by foot.

The hotel is also surrounded by plenty of shopping malls including K11, Xintiandi Style I and Xintiandi Style II, while the upscale shops of Huaihai Road is also within walking distance.

Rooms

With a total of 357 guest rooms, The Langham, Shanghai Xintiandi is perfect for both business and leisure travellers alike with its spacious rooms starting at 40 square metres (430 square feet), cloud-like and giant “Blissful Beds”, glass working desks, comfy lounge chairs and floor-to-ceiling windows that overlook either the Shanghai cityscape or Xintiandi district. Dark wood furnishings give the rooms an elegant, timeless feel, while mustard yellow accents add a warm and cosy vibe.

We especially loved having the bathtub and shower separate (while still being in the same wet area), and the Diptyque amenities (in a large, more sustainable format) was a nice touch. A selection of Executive Rooms and Suites get access to The Langham Club on the 27th floor of the hotel, which is well worth the upgrade. Not only is there plenty of space to get work done whilst enjoying the sky-high views of Shanghai, but the breakfast, afternoon tea and evening drinks are a great perk to have.

Dining

When it comes to F&B, the jewel of The Langham, Shanghai Xintiandi is definitely T’ang Court on Level 5 of the hotel – a Michelin-starred restaurant serving classic Cantonese cuisine. Under the guidance of Chef Tony Su, some of their signature dishes include fresh spotted grouper in a matsutake mushroom soup that’s been simmered for eight hours, and a crispy deep-fried crab meat and onion in crab shell filled with premium hairy crab.

The Lobby Lounge, with its three-storey high chandelier, is a popular spot for all-day dining and afternoon tea, while Cachet serves Mediterranean cuisine both indoors and outdoors in the al fresco area sponsored by Taittinger champagne. Finally, The Langham, Shanghai Xintiandi also has a outdoor terrace called XTD Elevated that’s great for hosting private events and parties.

Wellness

Head down to B1 for the fully-equipped fitness centre, indoor swimming pool, and award-winning Chuan Spa, which offers a range of signature spa treatments guided by the Five Elements (metal, wood, water, fire and earth) to melt all your stresses away. From foot massages to facials and full-body massages, it’s the perfect way to pamper yourself after a long day of shopping and sightseeing.

Verdict

Whether you’re coming to Shanghai for business or pleasure, (or ‘bleisure’, as they call it nowadays), The Langham, Shanghai Xintiandi is a great pick for its unbeatable location, classic rooms and suites, excellent dining options and and East-meets-West wellness facilities.
