Copenhagen. Capital of climate change and home to bicycle lanes, coffee lovers and Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid. If that wasn’t enough, it’s also the happiest city in the world. Looking for some Scandi sophistication with a hint of fairytale mystery? Here’s our guide on where to find the secrets to happiness in Copenhagen.
Where to stay
Part of the famous amusement park, Tivoli Gardens, Nimb Hotel was originally built in 1909 to resemble a Moorish palace. When lit up at night, the five-star boutique hotel looks like a beautiful illustration straight out of a One Thousand and One Nights storybook. The stay includes free entry and access to rides in Tivoli Gardens, but the best part is the enchanting scene of the romantic 19th-century representations of the Orient straight from your balcony, with the classic carousels and cherry trees strung with fairy lights bringing a little magical dazzle to Denmark.
Two iconic buildings that once brewed Carlsberg beer are now home to Hotel Ottilia, adding historic character and industrial architecture. Many original features of the old brewery have been preserved, like the old malt hoppers in the lobby, while the complimentary ‘Wine Hour’ and ‘Nightcap Hour’ are a playful reference to the property’s past. Looking to the future, Hotel Ottilia is committed to responsible environmental practices and it shows – it’s currently rated one of the most eco-friendly hotels in the city. Talk about coming full circle!
Where to Eat
Noma is a no-brainer – voted the world’s best restaurant five times, the three-Michelin-star culinary mecca is headed by chef René Redzepi and known for pioneering the concept of foraging. Ready to explore parts unknown? A tip from the lucky few who managed to get a table: about two months before the season starts, the system opens up for reservation. Ensure you are ready a few minutes in advance and ideally, have multiple devices working.
At Juno the Bakery you’ll find pastries – but not just any pastries. Think buttery, flakey puff pastry dusted with cardamom sugar… or try the apple mille feuille with salted caramel, roasted apple compote and lightly whipped cream. Add a cup of coffee and find yourself a spot outside at the terrace to complete the cosy ‘hygge’ happiness and you’ll understand why this little bakery has such a big reputation.
Where to Shop
Design and craftsmanship runs in the Danish DNA. At the locally loved Larsbjørnstræde and avant-garde Pilestræde, you’ll find many independent fashion boutiques and furniture shops. Visit Reseller for stylish vintage apparel and accessory pieces, Keramiker for carefully crafted ceramics or Aiayu for Danish designer items with minimal environmental footprint.
Denmark is the home of Lego and if you’re traveling with children, it shouldn’t be missed. The store has exclusive sets that you can’t find elsewhere and is located along Stroget, the longest pedestrian shopping street in the world. Big ‘kids’ will love the flagship store of Bang & Olufsen at Østergade, if incredible audio quality and sleek visual style makes their hearts skip a beat.
Where to Spa
