Dust off your passports and get set to jet set again! After an eternity of closed borders, much of Asia and the world has reopened to travel, though with restrictions. Singapore and Vietnam require travellers to be vaccinated but have dropped compulsory testing. Hong Kong opened its borders to non-residents on 1 May but mandates seven-day hotel quarantine for everyone entering the territory. Here then are seven top tips to get you flight fit and ready for your next plane trip.
1. Research and plan
The days of booking a last-minute flight to a random destination are over. Entry requirements for each country are more varied than ever, with extra paperwork needed to be done in advance. Things can change at a moment’s notice and staying informed is crucial, so do your research for every destination you wish to visit, including transit points.
2. Get vaccinated
Most countries require visitors to be fully vaccinated, which often means booster shots too. Ensure that your proof of vaccination complies with the official requirements of your intended destination.
3. Look for deals and treat yourself
Visitor numbers in many countries are still down. This means there are some terrific deals to be had in popular places such as Phuket and Bali, especially during off-peak times. If you can afford it, splurge on a little luxury, you deserve it.
4. Take out travel insurance
Important before, essential now. Check inclusions and exclusions carefully, and whether your policy covers you for treatment and hospitalisation should you contract covid while travelling.
5. Travel within your comfort zone
Normally, we’d say the opposite, but these are not normal times. It’s ok to feel nervous about taking your first overseas trip in two years and if it means relaxing in your pool villa and avoiding crowds, that’s fine. If you prefer the hustle and bustle of a big city, then go for it.
6. Be prepared, patient and flexible
Check that your passport is valid. Before heading to the airport, ensure you have all documents at hand and printed off as backup. Once there, be prepared for delays, and chill, most of us are a little rusty about travel.
7. Have a great trip!
Be in the moment, not just on your phone, and savour the experience. Remember, travel should be fun.
