Fresh air, sunshine and stretches of sand – what’s not to love about Singapore’s balmy beaches and coasts? We’ve rounded up some of the Little Red Dot’s best coastal hangouts to help you plan your next day out.
1. Coney Island
This little uninhabited island may be small in size but it’s rich in character, biodiversity and quiet beaches. Easily accessible from Punggol, head over in the early morning when it’s cooler to explore – you can even get some cardio in at the mini obstacle course made of uprooted casuarina trees and other recycled materials. For something a little less strenuous, stroll across the mangrove boardwalk or simply chill under a shady tree at the beach and cool off in the water.
From Punggol Settlement, follow the signs along Punggol Promenade Nature Walk towards Coney Island’s entrance, 7am-7pm daily, nparks.gov.sg
2. Pulau Ubin
A nod to the kampong days of yore, Pulau Ubin is the last remaining ‘village’ in Singapore and the perfect mini getaway for nostalgic nature lovers and cycling enthusiasts. Hop on a bumboat from Changi Point Ferry Terminal and score some wheels at one of the many rental shops – you’ll need them. It’s a 20-minute hike or five-minute ride to the trail leading you to the iconic lookout point of Bukit Puaka. On the way back, tuck into a fresh coconut from Ah Ma’s drink stall to energise you for the unique coastal habitats at Chek Jawa Wetlands, where six major ecosystems meet.
Take a DIY tour of the boardwalk and viewing tour, or check the NParks website for the schedule of guided tours of the intertidal flats. You can also go kayaking amongst the mangroves and open sea, where you’ll catch sight of otters, hornbills and kelongs, or traditional stilt houses. Wind up the day with a simple bite at Season Live Seafood – there are even campsites for outdoorsy types to spend the night.
From Changi Point Ferry Terminal, take the Pulau Ubin ferry, 6am-7pm, nparks.gov.sg/pulau-ubin
3. St John’s & Lazarus Island
Catch a ferry from Marina South Pier for some fun in the sun at the largest of the Southern Islands in Singapore. Though it may not be Bali, the island’s sheltered swimming lagoon is a decent spot for a dip. Slather on the SPF as you stroll across the manmade causeway to the sandy shores of the neighbouring Lazarus Island. A popular docking spot for yachts, the horseshoe-shaped beach is arguably the best in Singapore. Come prepared – there are no stores on either island.
From Marina South Pier, take the ferry to St John’s & Lazarus Island, 9am-6pm, nparks.gov.sg
4. Tanjong Beach Club
For weekend seaside party vibes, there’s nowhere quite like Tanjong Beach Club to flex those abs and clink champagne glasses. Book a day bed to chill, take in the DJ’s tunes and chow down on some grub in between splashes in the pool.
120 Tanjong Beach Walk, +65 9750 5323, 10am-8pm Mon to Fri, 9am-8pm Sat-Sun, tanjongbeachclub.com
5. Sembawang Park
On the northern tip of Singapore overlooking the Johor Straits, you’ll find a big park with heaps of family-friendly activities like fishing, barbecue pits and a marine-themed playground. This is also one of the few places where you can let Fido loose – yes, there’s a dedicated dog run. Don’t leave without having a bite in the colonial-era Beaulieu House.
