Meet the Editor: Valeria Avirett, Miami

There’s no one better suited as resident editor for Miami than Valeria Avirett, who returned to her home city after spells in New York, Singapore and at LUXE HQ in Hong Kong. When not gadding around town seeking out fabulous residences for her luxury real estate business, Valeria keeps the Miami guide spruced with insider recommendations, tips and intel – read on for a few of her favourite places to eat, shop and explore and follow her jaunts @ValeriainMiami

Coffee Culture

Miami is heavily influenced by the Cuban culture and in almost every corner of the city, you can stop and grab a jolting cafe Cubano (high-octane espresso), a Cortadito (espresso topped with foamed milk) or a Café con leche (my personal favourite, it’s a sweeter version of a latte).

Beaches

We are spoilt in Miami as we have access to pristine white-sand beaches in all directions. South Pointe Park offers it all: green open spaces for a great picnic, scenic views of Miami Beach and great amenities (park/showers/bikes/pier). Be sure to take your snorkel – you’ll spy loads of fish super-close to shore.

Coconut Grove

The local neighbourhood go-to is the green and lush Coconut Grove. This is where I spend most weekends, sailing off Biscayne Bay or under the canopy of the trees at Peacock Park or sipping a glass of rosé at Glass and Vine. It’s also home to The Polished Coconut, which offers wardrobe and conscience therapy via its gorgeous collection of artisanal bib bobs and accessories.

Miami Design District

No longer just beach, scene and surf, Miami is a much more sophisticated city than it used to be and Miami Design District is the epicentre of fashion, art and all things luxe. Beyond interesting architecture and outdoor art, the District is host to the new ICA (Institute of Contemporary Art) and some of the hottest tables in town: Michael’s GenuineGhee and Swan.

Upper Buena Vista

Miami is dotted with shopping opps, but Upper Buena Vista is my pick for its open-air boho vibe and great curation of retail, all under the shade of giant banyan trees – one of my top shops is House of Findings, a stash of vintage and upcycled fashion and accessories.
