Mid-Autumn Festival 2021: Celebrations Around The World

Falling on Tuesday, 21 September this year, Mid-Autumn Festival is celebrated by folks all over the world with pretty lanterns, golden yolk-filled mooncakes and boisterous family gatherings. Its history dates back over 3,000 years when ancient Chinese emperors worshipped the moon for plentiful harvests. With the moon at its fullest that day, here are several events happening in LUXE cities around the world to mark Mid-Autumn Festival 2021:

Hong Kong

Over in Hong Kong, capture the magic of Mid-Autumn Festival at Tai O fishing village, where locals and volunteers have created and strung up hundreds of colourful lanterns for the occasion. The lanterns are lit every evening from 6:30pm-9:30pm and will be up until the end of September 2021.

New York

Celebrate Mid-Autumn Festival in New York with a full day of performances, activities and culture with the China Institute. With a packed schedule of family-friendly activities including a live performance of chinese music, art workshops, Chinese shadow puppetry and lantern making, you won’t want to miss out.

Go moon gazing this Mid-Autumn Festival in London with an actual astronomer, Nicholas Joannou, a fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society and organiser/committee member for the Baker Street Irregular Astronomers (BSIA). The event will take place in Regent’s Park for an evening of celebration and moon appreciation.

Singapore

Light up the night at Gardens By The Bay in Singapore, where they’ve set up “Sky Lanterns” floating up a Supertree and a “Rabbits’ Forest” in the Flower Dome. With two additional community lantern displays – Colonnade of Lights and Origami Crane Trees – and cultural performances on the weekends, even those from abroad can tune in via the live streams on Facebook.
