Mocotó, São Paulo: Stellar Stews, Killer Caipis

Few things are worth a 40-min schlep in São Paulo, with its grinding, growling, round-the-clock traffic, but believe us when we say, Mocotó is a hands-n-pants-down must-do on any discerning foodie’s agenda.

In a backwater neighbourhood to the northeast of Paulista, this unassuming little eatery, abuzz 7-days a week with eager hordes, has gained a rep as one of the region’s most exciting dining destis, with second generation chef Rodrigo Oliveira at its helm. The traddy kitchen is beloved for its slow-cooked stews, and the moreish chicharrónes and crispy pulled pork and pumpkin puree balls are not to be missed – but unless you like a whiff of moo in your brew, approach the cow hoof with caution. And as is only natural in Brazil, a caipirinha accompaniment, mashed up with exotic fruits from caju to jabuticaba, is also imperative.

If your rumbly tum can’t endure the wait (trust us, there will be queueing), slip next door for a few refined morsels and local craft ale at younger, smarter sis Esquina Mocotó. Just be sure to nab a cab with GPS, as this far-flung hun takes ‘off-the-beaten-track’ to a whole new level.
