On The Radar: Cinker Pictures, Beijing

From brand spanking boutique hotels to fresh fine diners and new artisan retailers, On The Radar is all about spotlighting LUXE’s latest finds.

What:

Cinker Pictures

Where:

Sanlitun, Beijing

Why:

In a city where safe smog levels are, quite literally, a breath of fresh air, indoor hibernation has become a necessary pastime for Beijing’s denizens. It’s no wonder then, that this swish vintage-tinged diner-cum-boutique cinema has sparked a dedicated following among the city’s sophisti-cats seeking respite from the grit n’ grime.

Inspired by the historic screening houses of New York and London and fronted by old-school movie signage, Cinker Pictures hits all the right notes with on-the-mark Mid-Century atmos including oversized leather armchairs, plush velvet curtains and cocktails-on-call. The on-screen line up is as equally impressive, featuring a top-notch curation of arthouse titles and more contemporary blockbusters, spanning The Godfather trilogy to Wes Anderson’s 2014 big hitter The Grand Budapest Hotel.

Once you’ve had your fill of flicks – or if pre-show nibbles are more your bag – shimmy on into the adjoining elevated diner where ritzy brass accents and moody lighting set the scene. Snacky bar bites and heartier Euro-tinged plates like steak tartare and a plethora of rich desserts delight, but it’s the thematically monikered tipples (Big Lebowski-inspired White Russians and the like) that really steal the show.
