Scent and the City

Perfume is a potent memory trigger, and indeed, the mere sniff of a whiff can instantly cast you back to travels of yore. With summer in full swing and vacays on the mind, we introduce four fab fragrances, each evoking the spirit – and scent – of a city.

Where: New York
Smells like: An Upper West Side garden party

Longing for the rolling greens of Central Park? Recall its floral aromas with a spritz of Joya’s Foxglove, a Gotham-centric fragrance with notes of Saltmeadow cordgrass, hyacinth leaves, jasmine and white cedar. Using the odourless (albeit profoundly poisonous) foxglove as its canvas, this potion is a heady concoction that references the Big Apple’s botanical history. Fleur-bulous!

Where: Hong Kong
Smells like: Neon-lit street strolls

While the Fragrant Harbour’s myriad modern-day aromas might not always invoke a pleasant reaction, the East Asian-inspired brew Frau Tonis’ Red Poppy infuses the city’s steamy summer nights and exotic charm. Evocative of heady incense and sultry heat, HK is just a spray away thanks to a sumptuous spicy combo of red poppy, star anise, fennel seed and pepper.

Where: Rome
Smells like: Twilight terrazzo sips

Ahh, bellissimo Roma. Cue balmy nights, cobbled streets and carbonara-rama. But first, aperitivo! No fragrance scent-sationalises Italy’s revered tipple tradition better than Le Labo’s Neroli 36. This lively, sensual aroma includes citrus oil, steam-distilled from the blossom of bitter orange – chinotto, naturale. Not only is it named after the Princess of Nerola (a town but a stiletto’s toss from Rome), who used it to fragrance her gloves, it also packs the same zesty punch as summertime’s top citrus-sip, the negroni.

Where: Barcelona
Smells like: Meandering the markets

The all-consuming aromas of Barcelona’s culinary fireworks might well leave an irrevocable imprint on your mind – not to mention your waistline – but who wants to start smelling like battered baby squid? Instead, sample the city’s vibrant foodie-sphere via Byredo’s Pulp. Its punchy, fruity bouquet sampling bergamot, cardamon, fig, red apple, peach flower and praline will whirl you back to the fruit n’ spice- stacked arcades of La Boqueria in a jiff. Sniff, sniff!
