Hong Kong’s markets may be stuffed with more gimmicky tatt than you can shake a selfie stick at, but if you’re looking for a stylish souvenir of your stay, sashay this way…
Okay, so you’ve snapped every angle of HK’s dynamic skyline, but nothing beats Yellow Korner for original photography. Their collection of limited-edition art prints depict some of Hong Kong’s most iconic and stunning street scenes. Savvy local shutterbugs have captured the jaw-dropping view from Victoria Peak, TST’s heaving Nathan Rd and the pastel-pretty Choi Hung Estate among others.
Florence Traissac, the artist behind Arteflo, creates one-of-a-kind streetscapes and is available for commissions. Her colourful painted prints capture Hong Kong’s hustle n’ bustle through intricate animation, including Sheung Wan’s neighbourhood atmos and curio-crammed shophouses in Think Pink in Sheung Wan, as well as the city’s vibrant after-dark festivities and rituals in Deep Night.
Fashion icon Iris Apfel made a visit to the splendid interiors trove Lala Curio, on her May trip to the Fragrant Harbour, and nest-featherers of all ages will squeal with glee over the stash of one-off Sino-style knick-knacks. This Wan Chai shop is stacked full of whimsical bobble, from chinoiserie-printed pillows and ornate jewellery to coral chandeliers and classically styled furny, sourced from across the globe.
Or, for something a little different, shop simple, handmade, contempo ceramics at Latitude. Julie Progin and Jesse McLin’s one-of-a-kind treasures include everything from delicately printed bowls, mugs and pods to contempo bronze glaze plates, hanging pendant lamps and quirksome candle holders. Bespoke designs available upon request, too.
This city sports more rip-off Fendi than it does dai pai dongs. But for a unique style buy (that you won’t see on the arm of every Tina, Vic and Sally), pick up one of Michelle Lai’s covetable Mischa sacs. Whether you’re in the market for a sophisty structured shoulder bag, cute carryall, nifty pouch or wallet, these homegrown designs are fashioned in an array of trademark prints, cotton canvas and quality calf-leather finishes.
