What do Hong Kong and Amsterdam have in common? Much more than you think, according to television producer and host, CJ Cheung. The Dutch-born-Chinese travel lover has made it his mission to uncover the differences and similarities between the two cities – both of which he calls home.
In Amsterdam, his show CHANG explores what it’s like to be Chinese in the Netherlands – lion dancing and Chinese opera face painting not withstanding – while in Hong Kong, his show Orange Fuzz touches on a variety of Dutch topics in Hong Kong. And while both shows naturally have a travel element to them, CJ aims to touch on broader subjects such as mental health, culture and sustainability, and how they differ in each city.

In between his busy schedule of travels, we sat down for a coffee with CJ for our latest edition of Talking Travel:
Tell us about your production company and what you do?
We produce content (mainly television shows) in Holland and Hong Kong. We started with two docu-series about Chinese culture that were broadcast in the Netherlands, and we are currently working on several seasons of shows for the TVB network in Hong Kong.
What are some topics that you’ve been covering in the show?
We cover topics such as discrimination, #stopasianhate, and why Chinese people don’t speak up. Now, we have several shows in production for channels in Hong Kong and Holland, where I challenge stereotypes in both. My shows also cover topics such as mental health, art, freedom, cultural differences, veganism, sustainability, and of course, travel tips too!

Speaking of travel, what is your best trip or travel memory?
Hua Hin in Thailand in 2014. I was riding my scooter when I encountered a wild elephant along the road. That was such a wonderful experience because normally you’d only see them in the zoo, but this was so special. I can’t really describe how it felt but it was like connecting with nature. The funny thing is, the elephant could sense that I was afraid so it walked to the other side of the street. I ended up going back and forth four times just to experience that moment again.
And the worst?
I don’t want to offend anyone, but let’s just say it rhymes with ‘bore.’
Your best travel tips?
Actually, I’m really good at packing my luggage. A lot of people think it takes a while, but I can pack in under an hour before going to the airport. All you have to do is calculate how many days you’re gone for, bring a lot of tops, and of course, a travel pillow.
Favourite cities in the world?
Definitely Bangkok. I just love everything about it – the people are so friendly and the food is amazing. Even if you’re not into Thai food, there are so many international options at all price points. I love Bali as well, because I love riding my scooter around without any destination in mind. My third favourite city has to be Paris. Every street is like a painting, and I love how Parisians can sit for hours to just talk, have dinner, and drink some wine.

Where do you usually bring visitors in Amsterdam?
Definitely Vondelpark for a picnic, and Museumplein for more picnics. In the Netherlands, it gets dark quite late, so hanging out at the park is a great way to spend the day with friends.
Another favourite spot of mine is Hannekes Boom, which is a restaurant/cafe located right behind the Central Station where you can chill out by the water under the coloured lights. I also like Buurtboerderij which is a place where you can get authentic Dutch pancakes with views of greenery and sheep.

Any favourite places in Hong Kong?
I love hanging out at Slash, a coffee shop turned cocktail bar by night.
Aisle or window seat?
Window, for sure, so I can get some sleep.
Tips for getting over jetlag?
Sleep as much as possible!
What’s still on your bucket list?
I haven’t been to New York yet, because when I was still living in the Netherlands, I always preferred to go somewhere warmer. I think New York would be like walking through a movie set! Another place I’d love to visit is Suriname, because of the Dutch influences and Hong Kong people who emigrated there. I really want to try their no-stress lifestyle – even the bus stops have no timetable!
Finally, where are you off to next?
Amsterdam to finish off some filming, then it’s back to Hong Kong.
