It may be a quintessentially British tipple, but the G&T; gets a saucy Spanish makeover at Barcelona’s Ultramarinos, a buzzy bi-level haunt in rapidly gentrifying, grunge-cool Raval.
The long marble bar struts its stuff with no less than 25 different concoctions using 180 gins from around the globe, but signature house blends use old-time favourite Hendrick’s, tarted up with home-brewed ‘perfumes’, myriad fruity additions like orange tonic, fresh strawberries, and cardamom pods, or the best of friends: apple and cinnamon.
There’s even a neat menu of vodka-based varieties and a killer caipirinha for the (gasp!) non gin-lovers. Add to that a dim-lit, brick-lined vintage-y interior, reasonable price points and a rotating roster of up-and-comer DJs, and you’ve got an always-rammed, hip locals’ go-to. ¡Salud!
